He moved with his family to near Emporia Kansas in 1896, and on to Holly, Colorado in 1907. In May 1908 he and his sisters Beda and Rosanna all graduated from eighth grade together at Holly CO. He left Colorado in the summer of 1913 and arrived at his sister (Minnie's) house in Iowa November 12, 1913.

He was a farm hand and in March began working for Enos Maxwell. In August of the same year, a professor from William Penn College, Oskaloosa, IA, visited the farm and talked him into attending William Penn College and playing football. He graduated in May of 1818. After graduation he enlisted in the Army and served until the end of World War I. He then taught school in Indiana and Illinois. In 1927 he began teaching and coaching at George Washington High School in Indianapolis, IN. He coached there for 31 years, retireing in June 1958. During the depression he built his own home on 6.2 acres. He also was active in the First Friends Church at indianapolis and was Sunday School greeter for 30 years. He was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1973. At the age of 65 he purchased a loom on which he created approximately 460 rugs.

He married Susie Verle Edwards on 20 Aug 1919. They were the parents of 2 son, Benjamin Edwards and Joseph Daivd and 4 daughters, Della Sue, Barbara Beth, Mary Ellen & Betty Ann.
