Joseph D. Bogue, 73, of New Castle, died Monday morning, March 24, 2008 at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. He was born Nov. 5, 1934 in Indianapolis to Henry B. and Susie Edward Bogue. After graduating from Washington High School in Indianapolis, he entered Princeton University. He received a Bachelor of Music Education and a Bachelor of Muncie Theory from Indiana University in 1953. At Northwestern University, in 1961, he earned a Masters of Music in Stringed Instruments. He played string bass with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He taught public school music in IN, IL, NY, and CA. He taught English at New Castle Jr. High and was head of the Dept. there.

Joe retired from teaching in 1978 and began a second career as Piano Tuner/Technician. He also founded a company called Pythagoras Geometrics and produced handcrafted wooden puzzles that were proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem. Throughout his teaching and tuning careers, he was also a professional bass player. He performed at Starlight Musicals with Jim Edison Orchestra, played shows at Clowes Hall, Beef and Boards, Embers and Brodys. He played with Al Cobine Big Band and at the Skyline Club with Steve Allee. He toured the US and Canada with Henry Mancini, Andy Williams, Perry Como, Johnny Mathis and others.

Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by a sister, Della Lesure (husband-Harvey); a brother, Benjamin (wife-Jean). He is survived by his wife, Carolyn and two sons, Aaron (wife-Pamela) of Indianapolis and Adam (wife-Kathy) of Framingham, MA. Surviving grandsons are, Brian, Joseph, Thomas, Edward; one granddaughter, Mary May; sisters, Barbara (husband-Rex) Anderson, Mary Mynatt, Betty (husband-Donald) Schroeder; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Macer-Hall Funeral Home, 600 South Main St., New Castle. Ann Proescholdt-Shaw and Dick Willis will officiate. Friends may visit with the family one hour before the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Henry County Community Foundation or a charity of your choice.
