Josephine was the daughter of George W. & Mary Jane Messick Conwell. She was a young child, when the Civil War broke out. Her father enlisted as a Pvt. in Co. I, 69th Indiana V.I., on August 19, 1862 and was killed, in battle, at Helena, Arkansas on February 15, 1863.

Mrs. G.W. Conwell was left as a widow with many children, but kept her family together the best that she could. Some of the children spent short stays in the Indiana Soldiers & Sailors Home at Knightstown. When they were older, Josephine and her sister, Georgetta, were invited to live in the home of their elder brother, David Henry Bell.

Josie married Benjamin A. Bell, the son of Nehemiah & Evaline Smith Bell, on February 10, 1887. The couple moved to Indianapolis and settled in that city. They were the parents of Effie Merle and Ruth Marie Bell.
