She was valedictorian of her senior high school class at Grandville High School and had a full ride scholarship to Hope College in Holland, MI. However, being the oldest of 6 children, her parents didn't allow her to take it because they didn't know if they could provide the same thing for the rest of the kids. She loved to write letters and notes to people and lived in Byron Center, Mi. most of her married life, raising her family on a muck farm the Berends family owned. Later in life she and Ed moved to Florida to enjoy their retirement years.
