His brother Joel operated a grocery on the ground floor of that same building.
He was named after Dewitt Clinton, U.S. Senator and Governor of New York.
July 08, 1861 he was a Lieutenant in Company A, 5th Brigade, California Militia, Oroville Guard, Under the command of General George Mason in Prescott, Arizona.
September 06 1865 he was elected Public Administrator in Oroville, California.
