His brother DeWitt Clinton Burlingame was a dentist and had an office on the third floor of the same building "All operations connected with Dentistry skillfully performed."
Joel was a minister and a teacher so he moved frequently when assigned different churches. Each place he moved he established a school or academy.
He kept a journal that was much like a family bible. That journal is currently in the care of the San Mateo Historical Society in Redwood City, California.
