Services for Newell Bates, 71, of Gatesville were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Scott's Funeral Home chapel. Rev. Leo Riley and Rev. Rex Tilly officiated, and burial was in Restland Cemetery.
Mr. Bates, a farmer-rancher and a retired Gatesville State School for Boys employee, died Dec. 23 at his home on Route 2. He had lived in the Gatesville area more than 30 years.
Born June 25, 1910, in Lampasas County, Mr. Bates was the son of the late John and Emma Bates. He was reared in Lampasas and graduated from high school there.
He married the former Verna Mae Matchen on Nov. 14, 1932, in Lometa. They resided in Blanco County before moving to Gatesville in 1950.
Mr. Bates was a member of the Eastwood Baptist Church and served on the church's board of deacons. He was also a member of Turnersville Masonic Lodge No. 620.
A son, James Bates, died in 1975.
Mr. Bates is survived by his wife; one son, Dewayne Bates of Gatesville; one sister, Mrs. Emma Laura Garner of Lampasas; a brother, Willie D. Bates of Lampasas; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers for Mr. Bates' funeral were deacons of the Eastwood Baptist Church.
