Edith Emma Beckstrand Cox, 90, died Sunday, March 4, 2001.

She was born April 4, 1910, in Meadow, Utah, to Emmaline Bennett and Joseph Conrad Beckstrand and always considered Meadow the best hometown in the world.

Still, she inherited a love of geography from her mother and enjoyed travels in the United States and abroad.

She attended elementary school in Meadow and high school in Fillmore and graduated from Snow College in Ephraim in 1930.

After teaching school in Meadow for three years, she married Melvin O. Cox of Fairview on March 10, 1933, in the Manti Temple.

This set the stage for almost 68 years of loving companionship, which provided an example of devotion for all who knew them. They lived in Fairview and Manti before moving to Salt Lake City in Dec. 1937.

Edith loved teaching and enjoyed her students in public schools and church classes.

She taught in the primary, Sunday school and relief society organizations of the Church of Jesus Christ, both in the Grant Eighth Ward, where she and Melvin lived for 22 years, and in the East Millcreek Ninth Ward, where they have lived since 1960.

She served as president of the Relief Society for six years in the Ninth Ward.

Another love was music.

Edith sang throughout the Salt Lake Valley with a choral group, the Chanson Singers, which practiced weekly at her home during the 1940s and 1950s.

She led a 50-voice youth choir and an outstanding ward choir in the Grant Eighth Ward and inspired enthusiasm in the congregation as chorister for Sunday school song practices.

She also made sure that her three daughters became competent pianists and encouraged her grandchildren in their musical pursuits.

Her greatest love was her family.

More than anything else she enjoyed them around her.

She was happy to have grandchildren live in the downstairs area of her home over the years and called each great-grandchild "absolutely beautiful."

Edith is survived by her husband, Melvin; two daughters, Sherilyn (Ben) Bennion, Salt Lake City, and JoLynn (Gayle) Warner, Cedar City; a brother, Orrin B. Beckstrand, Bountiful; and a son-in-law, Jerry Watts, Murray.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, three brothers and a daughter, Gayle Gregory Watts.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the East Millcreek Ninth Ward Chapel, 3750 S. Hillside Lane (2600 East).

Friends may call at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 S. 2300 E., from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Wednesday evening or at the ward chapel before the service 9:45 - 10:45 a.m.

Interment will be at the Meadow City Cemetery, Meadow, UT, after a brief graveside service at 3:30 p.m.
