Mary Harrison Herndon was the daughter of Joseph W. and Mary J. Herndon. She married John Barton Hinds on 17 July 1851 in either KY or MO and emigrated to TX about 1854. Sometime during the decade that followed John's death in 1869, Mary remarried to a Mr. Owens. He died after a short time leaving her widowed again. Her obituary was published in the Marlin Democrat: "Mary Harrison Hinds, mother of Mrs. W. A. Powell of this city died at her home near Chilton on April 1st in the 70th year of her age. Deceased came to Falls county from Missouri in 1854 and has lived here ever since, rearing a large family of children." Note that the family used the Hinds surname rather than Owens. Mary's remains were interred in Carolina Cemetery.
