John Loyd Thurmond was born on August 25, 1831 in Lincoln county, Kentucky, the youngest child of Georgia natives Henry & Polly (Kendley) Thurmond.

On July 6, 1853 he married Martha Kirtley of Barren county, Kentucky. They lived in Lincoln county and many of their 11 children were born there. In the early 1880s they moved west, to Greene county, Missouri, eventually settling in the town of Ash Grove, where John died in 1909.
