George Milton Buerke, 76, of Fredenberg, Minn., died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006 in his home at Fish Lake (formerly of Homecroft & Pike Lake, Minn.) He was born Nov. 6, 1929 in Duluth, Minn. to George and Angeline (Wagner) Buerke.

He married his sweetheart, Anita Lou Moore on June 10, 1950. George and Anita were the owner/operators of the Homecroft Superette Grocery Store. He was the founder of Better Brands, Inc. in 1959 and operated the business until his retirement in 1988. George was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gnesen Township. George was a proud member and past president of the Hilltop Lions Club. He was a past chairman of the United Way board of directors. He was also a member of the Elks Club and the Moose Lodge 1302. He was a past board member of the MN Beer Wholesalers Association. For the past 20 years, he and Anita traveled to their winter home in North Port, Fla. George was an active participant in this retirement community, having received awards for his contributions on many projects, particularly the new bocce ball courts. George loved to fish and hunt in the northland. He spent many hours on his Lake Superior boat. He was also an avid golfer. George was a proud father, a loving husband of 54 years, a grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Anita in April 2005; his parents; his brother, Calvin; sister, Laverne, and his daughter, Rosanne.

George is survived by his sons, Douglas (Jody) of Fredenberg, Minn., Dean of Alborn, Minn. and Randall of Esko, Minn.; daughters, Terese (Hector) LaFrance of Saginaw, Minn., Liana (Jon) Swenson and Cheryl (Steven) Lehto of Esko, Minn. and Donna (Jeff) Stolpe of Fredenberg, Minn.; 23 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL:11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church-Gnesen. Visitation 5-7 p.m. at Dougherty Funeral Home. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed to the Lighthouse for the Blind, The American Diabetes Foundation or the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. 2nd St., 727-3555.
