Eugene S. Gibson

1910-2004

Colonel Eugene S. Gibson, Ret., 94, of St. Joseph, Mo., passed away, Sunday, July 18, 2004.

He was born on March 14, 1910, the son of James William and Lula T. (Deakins) Gibson near Agency, Mo., where he grew up. In 1928 he graduated from Gower High School, and in 1935 graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo., with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.

Gene worked from 1935-41 for Agriculture Adjustment Administration as chief statistician in Columbia, Mo., and served as an officer in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1941-46 in the Pacific Theatre serving in New Guinea and the Philippines. After the war Gene worked for the Veterans Administration as Senior Training Officer out of the St. Joseph Office. He was again called to active duty from 1951-53 during the Korean War serving as Senior Advisor for supplies to the Korean Military. In 1957 he retired from active duty and was promoted to Colonel in the Reserves in 1961.

Gene received many military decorations and awards including; Bronze Star medals with Oak clusters, Combat Infantry Badge with a Star, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, Philippines Presidential Unit Citation Badge, and the Republic of Korea Citation Badge.

On November 6, 1965 he was united in marriage to Lucille Simpson. Gene retired in 1970 from a civil service position as a manpower control officer over the 5th and 6th U.S. Army's at Continental Army Command in Fort Monroe, Virginia. After retiring he and his wife, Lucille, moved to Columbia, Mo., and in 1995 moved to St. Joseph. Lucille passed away on January 16, 1997.

Gene was a member of the Gower Christian Church and the Gower American Legion Post #393, where he served as 1st Commander.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, sister, Gladys Gibson Beery, brothers, Jay, Robert, John H., Richard, and Lawrence.

Gene is survived by two brothers, Ted Gibson, Plattsburg, Mo., David Gibson and wife, Geraldine, Gower, Mo., sister, Louanna Gibson Burton, Brunswick, Mo., several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 21st at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Gower, Mo.,

Burial with Graveside Military Honors by Gower American Legion Post #393 at Allen Cemetery, Gower, Mo.

Visitation: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
