He was a farmer. In the 1830 Federal Census he and his family were living in New Lisbon, Otsego, NY. However, by 1836 they were living in Truxton, Cortland, NY. In her letters to relatives Brown's wife Patty writes about Brown's death and how it left her very poor. She also writes about her family, including her daughter, Lucia Smith Lyons, a missionary in the Sandwich (now Hawaiian) Islands and her daughter Catherine, wife of Artemus V. Bentley.
