Samuel Trowbridge Smith was the son of Brown Smith and Martha 'Patty' Donaldson and the husband of Annie Dalton. Samuel was admitted to practice as a lawyer in 1852. He practiced in Cortland County, New York, for 19 years. In 1852 he was also elected Colonel of the 41st Regiment, New York State Militia. In 1871 he and his family moved to New York City where he became a successful patent attorney. His wife, Annie Dalton Smith, was a physician.
From 'Democrat and Chronicle,' Rochester, New York, January 7, 1890:
"Mrs. Samuel Trowbridge Smith died Thursday at 316 West Twenty-third street, New York. Friday her husband died of the same disease and Sunday they were buried together at Woodlawn Cemetery (Bronx, NY). Both were stricken with cancer. Mr. Smith was 71 and his wife 69 years."
