Dean McKinley Peterson Sr., 81, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009.

Memorial service: 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Mount Olivet Chapel. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home.

Dean was born Sept. 15, 1928, in Birdville to William McKinley Peterson and Katy Mae Tyson Peterson. He graduated from Diamond Hill High School in 1947, and married his high school sweetheart, Nona Marie Sparks, in 1948. They celebrated 61 years of marriage earlier this year.

A successful businessman, Dean began as a supervisor for Convair during the 1950s and later went into the service station business as a franchise operator for Enco (Exxon). In 1967, Dean and his brother, Clarence "Pete" Peterson, founded Peterson's Automotive Service in Haltom City.
Dean, an athlete since high school, pitched men's fast-pitch softball as "Big Pete" for 25 seasons from 1949 to 1973, for locally sponsored teams including Calvary Methodist, Star-Telegram, Bill's Trim Shop, Fort Worth Merchants, Meadowbrook Methodist, Real-Tex and Plemons. He also coached Little League for his sons' teams.

He was an avid sports fan, hunter and fisherman, a formidable blackjack player, and a loyal, generous friend and employer. Dean was a man of his word, and extended that trust to others.

As a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, his passing creates an unfillable void in the family. He was a larger-than-life hero, a "John Wayne" to those who knew him, and a neighborhood dad to his children's friends.

Survivors: Beloved wife, Nona Peterson; sons, Dean Peterson Jr. and wife, Sheila, Jeffrey Peterson and wife, LouAnn, and Andrew Peterson and wife, Dana; daughters, Nancy Pardo and husband, Joe, and the Rev. Katie Stellar and husband, Mark; grandchildren, Eric Peterson and wife, Mandy, Jarrod Peterson and wife, Amanda, Katelyn Stellar, Abigail Stellar, Emily Stellar and Andrew Stellar; stepgrandchildren, Kourtney Riscky, Kaci Blevins, Brent Blevins, Laura Vinsant and Melissa Vinsant; great-grandchildren, Madelyn, Cara, Audrey and Daphne Peterson; stepgreat-grandchildren, Hayden and Hudson Riscky; sister, Mary Marcum and husband, Bill; sisters-in-law, Norma Spann and husband, the Rev.
