H H RITTENHOUSE who resided near Walkersville, died last week. He was one of the oldest and most substantial farmers of the county.
------------------------------------
Henry and Hannah were married in 1845 with Henry being 23 and Hannah 19 years of age.

Hannah was the first wife of Henry Hamilton Rittenhouse and they had 8 children, 7 living to adulthood. The last 2 born were twins, Hannah and Henry to which Hannah, the mother died from complications of the childbirth. Hannah the daughter died 2 months after her mother.

There is one who claims that Henry's middle name was Holmes, however, there is no documentation that it was Holmes and nothing to indicate that it ever was. Henry is shown on many primary documents with his middle name as Hamilton as he gave the information himself as well as his family members. No Documents could be proccurred with the name Holmes on it for Henry, only Hamilton. Henry's son was named after him and he also had the name Henry Hamilton.

The children of Henry and Hannah were:

Mary Luvenia

James Isaac--Buried in the Rittenhouse Cemetery

Samuel Ovington

John Bridgewater--buried in the Rittenhouse Cemetery

David H

Sarah Anna Catherine

Hannah--twin--Buried in the Rittenhouse Cemetery

Henry Hamilton--twin

After the death of Hannah in Apr 1860 aged 34, Henry married his second wife, Matilda Meeks in Dec 1861. He was aged 40 years and Matilda was also aged 40. No children were born to this union with the second wife. Matilda died aged 77 in 1898.

After Matilda's death, Henry married his third wife Sarah Alice Wilfong aged 33 in 1900. She also went by Alice Jane, to which they had 2 daughters, Lucy and Helen (verified in the birth records) with Helen going by the name Bluma, which is evident in the 1910 census on up. While researching, I thought Henry and Sarah had 3 daughters with Bluma being a third child but in the 1910 census it states she had 2 children with 2 living which verified that. Henry was 81 years old when "Bluma" was born and Sarah was 35. Henry lived to be 86 years old which was a good long life back then. After Henry's death at age 86 in 1908, the estate was settled later on. Sarah and her 2 daughters by 1910 moved to Ohio where they all lived until their deaths.

Henry died without a will and because he owned a lot of property and had many heirs a Fidcuiary Record was filed with the court and a $20,000 bond was paid which provided a percentage of the estates value to protect the heirs from any creditors. The court would have appointed an administrator to handle the division of property between all legal heirs of Henry's to which all property and monies were accounted for through the court system.

The Fiduciary Record names all of his children and his wife who were to inherit from his estate which numbered 9 at the time of his death, 7 from his first wife and 2 from the third. Some have Henry with 10-11 children at the time of his demise.

This is where the confusion lays. Had Henry "adopted" any children they too would have been listed as legal heirs but such was not the case. Many have that Henry and his second wife, Matilda adopted the 2 children shown in the 1880 census but this isn't correct. There is no proof of anything other than that one census record which shows them going by their own surnames. As we all know many census records have incorrect data and should be used along with other documentation for proof. Unfortunately, there is nothing to substantiate the claim that Eliza Self and Allen Dotson were ever adopted by Henry Rittenhouse. In 1890 Eliza Self married and listed her parents as Henry and Hannah Rittenhouse despite the fact that Hannah died in 1860 and Eliza according to the 1880 census was born abt 1873, 13 years after Hannah died.

There is much incorrect information on Henry as he is listed as being married to another wife however, he was only married 3 times which is listed above with dates.
