Mary Luvenia Rittenhouse was born in Albermarle County, Virginia on January 2, 1846, the daughter of Henry and Hannah Roberts Rittenhouse. After the Civil War, Mary married John Bruffey who was born on 19 April 1843 in Pocahontas County, Virginia, the son of Margaret Hartman (1818-1877) and James W Bruffey (1816-1902). John served in Company B, 26th Virginia Calvary.

Mary and John had nine children.

"BRUFFEY, MARY L. - Born Albemarle Co., Va. January 2, 1846, died at St. Mary's Hospital at Clarksburg March 22, 1915, after an operation for gall stones, age 69. Daughter of H. H. Rittenhouse, who moved to West Virginia in 1856. Married J. S. Bruffey in 1868. Had nine children, Mrs. W. H. Davisson, Mrs. A. J. Davisson?, J. H. Bruffey, J. W. Bruffey, and Misses Maggie and Georgia Bruffey. Also has a son, Henry, living in Ritchie county. She lived in Ritchie county with her son. From: Ritchie Standard"

"BRUFFY (sic), MRS. MARY L., aged 74, of Roanoke, Lewis county, died Monday, in a Clarksburg hospital. Body was taken to Pullman, Ritchie county. Services at the M. P. Church Wednesday, burial in the church cemetery. Deceased survived by husband, three sons and four daughters. Sons, J. H. Bruffey of Pullman; J. W. and J. R. Bruffey of Roanoke. Daughters, Mrs. W. H. Davison of Harrisville; Mrs. A. J. Wilson of Pullman, and Misses Maggie and Georgia of Roanoke. From: Clarksburg Telegram."
