Enlisted at Aurora, Indiana February 22, 1862 as a recruit transferred Co. B. 3rd Indiana Cavalry.(Reorganized) Promoted to Full Sergeant. Also served with Co.C. no muster out information.

Son of Joseph Alley and Susannah Neal, and grandson of Thomas Neal and Judith Shinault. Fewel was first married to Martha, by whom he had two sons. After her death he married Emma. Fewel served the Union in the Civil War in Co. 6, Indiana Calvary. He was a Sargent. In an interview at age 83, he stated, "Abe" was a sociable man who he talked with more than once, and that "Uncle Abe" did not think he was above anybody". Fewel had been on duty at the mansion of President Lincoln seven times. He was one of the escort which Gen. Sherman took to Harper's Ferry & he rode with Sheridan down the Shenandoah Valley. His regiment was the first to fire at the battle of Gettysburg.
