Carl W. Bartz was born January 20, 1842 in Zitmin Schlawe Pommern Germany, and died June 10, 1918 in Crofton, Knox, NE resulting from a fall. He came to Wisconsin in America in 1869 where he worked as a gardner meeting Hanna while there. He married Hanna Ernestine Fredricka Juhnke 1871. She was born June 28, 1847 in Friedensdorf,Schlawe Pommern Germany, and died October 26, 1933 in Cedar Falls, Iowa where she is buried in the Western Home Cemetery there.

They came to Knox County, Nebraska in 1870 where they worked as ranch hands on the Charles Mischke Ranch. Later they homesteaded at Beaver Creek, in Cedar County, NE,
on a farm located just south of the current Quinten Tramp farm.

Carl filed a homestead patent at Niobrara, NE from the US Government on March 30,1885 for 160.05 acres. On June 4, 1887 he received a U.S. certificate from President Hayes. That same year they lost two of their very young children, August and Ida to scarlet fever.

On March 6, 1892 he purchased S'SW' quarter of section 5 from Robert Seaman of New York for $880 and payment of 1887 taxes.

Carl paid the passage to the US for a Carl Juhnke and Herman Zart who were nephews to the couple.

Carl and Hanna had ten children, Charles, b. Feb. 27, 1970 at Aten, NE marrying Mary Schmuck, m. April 24, 1903, Philomina, "Minnie" b. 1873, married Orman Beecher, Richard "Bill" b. May 7, 1875, married Ida Leeuwrik, Oct. 6, 1899, Bertha,b. March 12, 1873 married Frank Suernam; Ernest b. October 26, 1879 married Regina Linberger 1902; Anna m. Luther Pomroy and Wallace Harrison; Emma b. Feb. 1890, m.Earl Lord; Otto b. March, 1892, m. Lillian Yonke. August and Ida died as young children.

In the early 1900's Carl and Hanna moved to Yankton for a few years. Charles batched at the farm while they lived there. After his marriage in 1903 the Carl
Bartz family moved back to this farm and lived in the front part of the home.

In 1910 Bill and Ernest moved to Oklahoma. Having a farm sale Ernest sold his land to Charles. Carl rented his land to a Kelly family for a year, then the next year sold it to Henry Ausdemore. In 1911 Carl and Hannah moved to the Severin Hobelheinrich home in the Crofton Public School Block.

Carl fell off the roof of their home on June 5th, hurting himself quite badly. He died June 10, 1918. He is buried in the Methodist Cemetery north and west of Crofton.

Hanna moved to Western Home facility which was a nursing home for elderly. She was buried in the Western Home Fairview Cemetery at Cedar Falls, Iowa.
