John Shoemaker or Johannes Schumacher (German spelling) born in 1759 and Mary Ann (Baker) his wife, came to Westmoreland County, Pa. from the vicinity of Lovettsville, Loudoun County, Virginia about 1770.

A family Bible record states that John was born in Loudoun County, Virginia and that his father, Philip Shoemaker, was born in Germany.

According to several sources he was a soldier in the war of the Revolution, in the American army, and also served during the Indian troubles in western Pennsylvania. his death was caused by injuries he had received during his army service. He is probably the John Shoemaker listed in the German Regiment in Pa. in Capt. William Heyser's Company.

Records say that when the Revolution broke out he wanted to join Washington's army, but was only 16, a little to young. So he fibbed about his age, saying that he was 17. They took him, but instead of giving him a gun, they made a drummer boy of him.

One source says he purchased and cleared a large tract of land in Franklin township, making a permanent home on that place, where he died, another source says John occupied land in Derry Township and was living there at the time of his death on August 11, 1815, aged 56 years of age.

John is buried in the old Hines Cemetery on the hill above Avonmore, Pa. Westmoreland Co.

His wife, Mary Ann (Baker), is interred a few miles distant in the cemetery of the Poke Run Presbyterian Church beside the grave of their daughter, Elizabeth (Townsend) with whom she was probably living at the time of her death on October 17, 1844.

On a large flat stone over the grave (which is now broken)... note the pictures posted, it says: He was an affectionate husband, a kind father, a respectable member of society, and much regreted by all who knew him.

John is my great great great great grandfather. It was wonderful being able to locate his gravesite and get a picture of his stone for his memorial.
