AUGUSTA, Ga. -Entered into rest Sunday, December 6, 2009 at the Charlie Norwood Veterans Administration Medical Center. Mr. Leroy Allen, Jr. of Grape Avenue, husband of Mrs. Gwendolyn Allen. Leroy Allen, Jr. was born on June 30, 1924 in Allendale, SC to the late Leroy and Louise Alfair B. Allen. He received his early, formal education in the schools of Aiken County. He was a Veteran of WWII and attended Paine College where he met Gwen Gaines. They later married and to this union they had a daughter, Harriett, the delight of their hearts. Leroy was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for over forty years. He served on the Trustee Board, sang with the E. L. Stewart Choir and served on the Board of the Tabernacle Credit Union. Leroy retired in 1989 from the United States Postal Service after forty years of service. He was an active member of the National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees. In his spare time, Al had a passion for photography and enjoyed it until his health began to fail. Leroy leaves many to cherish his memory and thank the Lord for the blessing of his life and companionship. He leaves his wife of 55 years, Ruth "Gwen" Allen; his daughter, Harriett; two brothers, Carl (Beverly) and Perry Allen of Aiken, SC; godson, Kenneth Jakes; goddaughter, Jennifer Murphy; sister-in-law, Doris Dunton and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted Friday, December 11, 2009 at 11:00a.m. from Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1223 Laney Walker Boulevard, Augusta, GA with Reverend Dr. Charles E. Goodman, Jr., pastor. Interment Belleview Memorial Gardens.
