This photo was taken during the first combat tour of the Black Sheep under Major Greg 'Pappy' Boyington's leadership. Due to pilots KIA or wounded, there are only 22 of the assigned 28 pilots in the photo, plus the intel officer (Walton) and the USN flight surgeon (Reames).

(WTP note: This has to be my favorite photo of the Black Sheep. I have colored it before but, the previous photo was a poor quality scan. Last summer, when I was in Pensacola and DC, I searched and searched for it and couldn't find it anywhere. Last week, with the help of some FB friends and a volunteer that went above and beyond the call of duty, I was able to obtain a great scan of the photo!) — with Gregory Boyington, James J. 1943 photo of Captain George M. Ashmun, USMC fighter pilot with the "Black Sheep" Squadron in the South Pacific. He was from Far Hills, New Jersey. He graduated from Newark Academy in June 1937, and from Hobart College in Geneva, New York, in May 1941 with a BS degree. He was a Sigma Phi in college, and won varsity letters in high school in track and captained the team in 1937. At the time this photo was taken, he had one brother, Charles Ashmun, serving as a USN submarine torpedoman, and a younger brother attending aviation training in Miami, Florida. Capt Ashmun enlisted in the US Navy in April 1941, and earned his pilot wings from Miami, Florida Training Station on July 14, 1942, in the rank of 2nd Lt. He was promoted to 1st Lt on January 31, 1943, and to Captain the same year on July 30. He was the son of Charles Ashmun, and Mary B. Young of Far Hills. He was was survived by his brother, Charles Ashmun, and by two step-brothers, Gayle and Alfred Young. This is a US Marines Corps photo. This photo was likely taken the same time as the group photo posted on this Find A Grave memorial.
