Biography and other research provided by Michael Imler Dopson, as Landis, a direct Descendant of George Michael Imler.

Some explanation is needed concerning the FAG that Landis Lee Bender II established concerning George Michael Imler and the burial site that has had many different names since it was established. Like so many family burial locations it was a private grave yard for, in most cases, direct family members. The name "Grave Yard" was used more than any other name to describe "Private, On Privately Owned Land Cemeteries". It will not have a survey on any County Register of Burial Locations, a Formal Name or will it be on a the County Tax Roles wherein it lays. Any location markers once put in place have long deteriorated beyond recognition as such.

Thomas C. Imler, in his book, "They Planted a Tree In The Wilderness" and later referred to in "Kernel of Greatness" never called it "The Imler Family Cemetery" nor the "George Michael Imler Family Cemetery". It was referred to as the "Cemetery on the Farm of George Michael Imler, or "The Graveyard on the Farm of George Michael Imler" and much later, after it was sold many times, as the Cemetery on the William Baer Farm, once owned by George Michael Imler. For locals in the Bedford area, that was a good definition as concerns its location.
So, what is its legal name---there is none. The one that Landis Bender has called it for this FAG is as good as any. Landis' FAG is dedicated to the entire George Michael Imler Property, which includes the Cemetery, Grave Yard, Family Burial Place, etc., etc. It was created December 5, 2009 and anyone known to be, thought to be, or that is going to be placed within its confines and wants it included within a FAG should list it as being in the one Landis Bender created as, Burial: George Michael Imler Family Cemetery, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Creating another name for the cemetery for the same place and then duplicate the personalities by making slight changes in the spelling of the name is frowned upon by Find A Grave.Com

According to Revolutionary War General St. Clair's "The History & Genealogy of Bedford County, Pa.", reprinted 3/82, Vol. 1, No. 4, Pg. 21, Titled, Burials of Revolutionary War Soldiers, Private George Michael Imler served in Captain Hermann's Company of the York County Militia. After his father George Mark died in 1788, George Michael brought his mother Anna Esther to Bedford County where she died. Laura Semenek had a marker placed at what was George Michael's farm and is now the William Baer farm. The cemetery where he is actually buried is on the other side of the road up on the hillside and is barely noticeable as a graveyard. There are remnants of headstones which are all illegible.

{NOTE: Error correction in the above copied text---the name of listed as Anna Esther as being George Mark Imler's mother was copied from Thomas C. Imler's Book, "They Planted…." and was never corrected within that book, although it was corrected later to reflect the actual name of George Michael Imler's mother, the wife of George Mark Imler. Her name was Esther Teresia Schaber, d/o Johannas Rudolf & Chaffarina Barbara Schaber. She was born October 13, 1709, Waldangelloch, Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland, married April 28, 1732 George Michael Imler in Wandangelloch Lutheran KB, Waldangelloch, Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland, listed on the Sailing Ship Charming Betty with George Mark Imler and died Dutch Corner, Bedford Co., Pa., buried in George Michael Imler Family Cemetery, Bedford Co., Pa.; Name, Birth, Marriage; parents names all confirmed by German Registered Genealogist on location in Germany}

Bedford County Inquirer - 15 November 1985, Bedford, Bedford County, Pennsylvania
Bedford's DAR honors Imler:

Members of the Bedford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) dedicated a marker on the the William Baer Jr. farm at Bedford RD 1 on Sunday, to honor Revolutionary War soldier George Michael Imler. Imler was born in York County (which is now Adams County), near Dillsburg in 1739. He was the son of emigrant parents, George Mark and Esther Anna (Schaber) Imler.

In 1761, he married Catherine Walter, a daughter of Rudolph and Hannah Walter, also German emigrants. {Editorial Note: Catherine Walter may have been his first wife, but the mother of his children was Maria Catharina Cristman with whom he married 6/26/1764 according to church records at Saint Mathews Lutheran Church, Hanover, York Co., Pa.} That same year, they bought land in Cumberland County, which is now Bedford County, in what is now King Township. For two years George walked from Adams County to Bedford County to clear land and build a cabin. In 1763, he and Catherine came to their new home. At that time, the only roads were Forbes Road from Carlisle to Fort Pitt and the road from Old Town, Md.. to Fort Bedford. After leaving Bedford, they followed Indian trails through the wilderness to their new home, now the village of Imler, named for them. Here they became the parents of Catherine, Peter, Eve, Conrad, Henry, Hetty. Elizabeth and Rebeccha. About 1781, the family, except for Peter, moved to "Dutch Corner," where Michael, Mary, Jacob and John were born.

George served his country during the Revolutionary War as a private in the York County Rangers. He served under Captain Emanuel Herman's militia - 5th Company, from 1783 until he was mustered out on February 26, 1789. For a short time he served as a Bedford County Ranger. Imler is buried on the Baer farm which he once owned. He died in 1816. George Michael was the progenitor of most Imlers across America. Because of the difficult terrain between the site of the actual graveyard on the Baer property and the roadside, William Baer suggested placing the dedication marker by the road. Ironically, one of the Baer grandchildren, Wade, is a tenth generation descendant of Imler through the family of his mother, the former Lynn Fisher. The DAR project was completed by Laura Semanek, a great-great-great-granddaughter of George Michael Imler. A reception was held following the ceremony at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Dutch Corner.

NOTE: George Michael Imler mother's name was Esther Teresia Schaber, The name Esther Anna Schaber was an error created in Thomas C. Imler's book, "The Planted A Tree In The Wilderness".
