Blanche Christensen "Voice Teacher"
Blanche Mortenson Christensen, 87, died on Dec. 1, 2009 in Salt Lake City of causes incident to age. She was tenderly cared for by her family.
Born Jan. 7, 1922 in Los Angeles, CA to Francis Marion and Elnora Taylor Mortenson. She married the love of her life, Cecil Glendwr Christensen, June 21, 1945 at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City. Their marriage was solemnized Feb. 7, 1946 in the Salt Lake LDS temple. They shared a beautiful life together. Chris preceded her in death in 1986. We know their reunion was joyful.
Blanche loved music and spent her life sharing her talent. She was a dedicated and talented singer. At 25, she began her professional career as a soloist with the Utah Symphony and performed with them every season for the next 21 years. She won many singing contests and awards, including the Governor's Award for the Arts in 2000. Teaching was her passion. She devoted over 40 years to teaching voice lessons - 27 of those as an associate professor at the University of Utah. She developed and published her own singing technique. She spent hours in her studio sharing her technique and many of life's lessons with her students.
Blanche was an active member of the LDS Church and always acknowledged that her talents and blessings came from her Heavenly Father. She had a strong testimony of the Savior. One of her great accomplishments was her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. We will miss her wisdom, her wit, her generosity, and her grace. She was our teacher.
She is survived by her devoted children, Michael (Tracy) Christensen, Cecile (Jay) Jensen, and Brent (Michelle) Christensen, 13 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Thural Mortenson, and dear sister Norma Fernley.
