Norma Lenor Mortensen Fernley, 79, died February 9, 2003 in Salt Lake City of complications from Parkinson's Disease. She was in her home and surrounded by loved ones.
Born October 28, 1923 in San Jose, California to Francis Marion and Elnora Taylor Mortensen. Married December 1, 1952 to Ronald Augustus Fernley in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Ronald preceded her in death in 1997. Graduated from West High School in 1942 and attended the University of Utah. Norma met her sweetheart Ronald at the Rainbow Rendezvous where he was quite taken with her ability to dance. They belonged to the BYU and Bonneville dance clubs. She had a beautiful Coloratura Soprano voice and Ron accompanied her on the piano. Her daughters remember being frequently lullabyed (sic) to sleep with the lovely music they made together. Norma worked for the Bintz Company, taught private voice lessons, and worked at the University of Utah Biology Department from which she retired in 1986.
Norma was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served many years as ward choir director. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Her fortitude and humor have taught us all how to endure gracefully.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sylvia (Don) Hartley and Allison Fernley (Judy Rose), two grandchildren, Shannon Tess and Samuel John Hartley, by step-granddaughter, Lisa (Justin) Powell and by sister Blanche Christensen. Preceded in death by her husband Ron and a brother Thural Mortensen.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, February 13, 2003 at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 Highland Drive. Friends may call Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. or on Thursday from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment Salt Lake City Cemetery.
A special thanks to the devoted caregivers from Home Instead and Vistacare Hospice who showed Norma such love and tenderness.
