Martin was baptized on Apr. 26, 1908 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Saukville WI by Rev. A.F. Nies. He was confirmed Apr. 9, 1922 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Friedensau, by Rev. H. Schabacher. Martin's life centered around the church where he had been elder, trustee, treasurer, Sunday school teacher and a member of the church choir, retiring just a few years ago. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at the time of his death. He attended school and graduated from high school. He also attended college.
On Apr. 18, 1934 he was united in marriage to Clara Louise Lillich at Tecumseh. To this union six children were born. Martin was engaged in farming and lived his entire life on the farm. He retired from active farming at the age of 70. He continued happily to raise chickens and supply eggs in the community. He served many years on the Deshler Public School board and remained active and always interested in education. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mrs. Della Wille, in 1956.
He is survived by his wife Clara of Hebron; two sons, John Raess and his wife Karin of El Paso TX and Jim Raess and his wife Connie of Carleton; four daughters, Marjorie Raess of Yigo, Guam, Mrs. Jim (Barbara) Thomsen of Madison WI, Mrs. Eldon (Janice) Pequette of White Rock NM and Mrs. Darrel (Carolyn) Degner of Carleton; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tues. Aug. 1 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Friedensau, in rural Hebron with Rev. Duane Simonson officiating.
Interment was held at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
Music for the service was provided by Trinity Lutheran choir, accompanied by Mrs. Elaine Lieder.
Casket bearers were Joel Raess, Jonathan Raess, Ryan Raess, Joshua Raess, Brian Degner and Ron Pequette.
