John Henry Raess was the oldest child of Fred W. Raess and Eva A. Schardt. He was born on Mar. 12, 1880, in Ozaukee County WI, near the town of Saukville, where he was baptized into the Lutheran Church on Mar. 14 by the Rev. Karl A. Meyer. Mr. Raess received his schooling in the Lutheran Parish School at Cedarburg where he was confirmed on Mar. 18, 1894, by Pastor Kirche.

In 1907, on May 21, he was united in marriage to Katherine A. Vetter at Port Washington WI by Prof. Paul Reuter. There were two children born to Mr. and Mrs. Raess, a son and a daughter. The daughter, Mrs. Herbert Wille, preceded her father in death on Apr. 16, 1956. The son, Martin Raess, lives on a farm some nine miles northwest of Hebron.

Mr. Raess came to Nebraska in 1909, early in the month of March, and settled on a farm south of Carleton where Leonard Schardt lives at the present time. After a few years Mr. Raess built a house on a farm one-half mile north and east of where he settled, where he lived and farmed the remainder of his life. When Mr. Raess came to Nebraska he became a communicant and voting member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Friedensau, where he was always an active member and served for many years as an officer of the congregation.

Mr. Raess is survived by his wife, Mrs. Katherine Raess; his son, Martin; two sisters, Mrs. Anne Ballbach and Mrs. Emma Vetter, both of Port Washington, Wis.; one brother, William Raess, of Fredonia WI. There are six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Raess enjoyed good health and continued working on his farm until this last season where he became ill only a few weeks ago.

He died at the St. Joseph Hospital in Concordia KS, on Dec. 20, having reached the age of 81 years, 9 months and 8 days.

Funeral services were conducted in Trinity Church at Friedensau Sat. Dec. 23, with the Rev. A.W. Mommens officiating. His sermon was based on Ps. 91:14-16.

The Male Choir, under the direction of James Robinson, sang "Asleep In Jesus."

Interment was made in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Friedensau.

The pallbearers were Harry Schardt, Ralph Schardt, Elmer Schardt, Lester Swensen, Erich Elting and Verland Schardt. Relatives present from a distance for the funeral were Mrs. Margaret Vinkenberg, Mrs. Arlene Ledered and Lester Swensen, of Lincoln.
