Velma E. Tolrude

Velma Tolrude peacefully passed away May 31, 2002, while being cared for this past year at Butler's Eldercare on Orcas Island.

Velma came into this world at White Owl, South Dakota, the seventh child of Roscoe Orval and Alta Blanche Doyle, Nov. 10, 1914. She was raised on a farm in White Owl until 1929. The family then move d to New Underwood, SD. Velma began working as a waitress while in the eighth grade in order to continue her education. She graduated in 1934 from New Underwood High School. The first member of he r family to earn a diploma, she then helped her younger brother, Charles, reach the same goal.

After graduating Velma moved to Sturgis, South Dakota. She there met chef Stanley Tolrude, marrying him on June 3, 1935. They lived in various small South Dakota towns and in Newcastle, Wyoming befo re moving to Portland, Ore. in 1941. Stanley got a job in the shipyards and Velma commuted to a waitressing job in Vancouver, Wash. each day. Moving there eventually in 1946, she worked as a waitres s and then a cook for Onslow's Restaurant for many years. She moved to Orcas Island in May 1973, where she cooked for the Senior Services Nutrition Program for 16 years before retiring in 1989.

Velma was a loving "Mom" to Eloise (Glen) Monson of Eastsound, with whom she resided for over 24 years, and Rochelle (Warren) Seaholm of Spokane; "Grandma" to Shelley Curtis and Sherri (Paul) Doherty ; and "Grandma-Grandma" to Katie, Bobby and Lindsay Curtis, and Patrick and Ryan Doherty. She is also survived by her brother, Dale Doyle of Vancouver, Wash.; sister Mary Wyatt of Las Vegas, Nev.; an d numerous nieces and nephews.

No services are planned at this time. Remembrances may be made to the Orcas Island Senior Center.
