Virgie Hasten Burks, 76, Tuscumbia, died Wednesday at Memorial Community Hospital (Jefferson City). He was born June 19, 1917, in Tuscumbia, a son of John and Georgia Fancher Burks. He was married October 1938 in New Madrid, to Ola Mae Taylor, who died June 3, 1993.
He was a lineman for a Sikeston power company until 1977, when he moved to Tuscumbia.
Survivors include: two sons, R. L. Lee, Tuscumbia, and Bobby Gene Burks, Winfield; two daughters, Annie Hines, Gustine, Calif., and Georgia Lowe, Godfrey, Ill.; three sisters, Jewel Long, St. Elizabeth, Fern Huddleston, LaMonte, and Virginia Wilson, Iberia; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Virgie Burks Jr., in 1969.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Stevinson-Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. Bro. Gene Edwards will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Tuscumbia. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
