THE FRESNO BEE OCT 13, 2004
RUSSELL WARNER GASH
AUG 12, 1921 -OCT 9, 2004
Born to an early California pioneer family, Russell spent his first years growing up in the foothills of Madera County near Raymond before moving to Fresno. He graduated from Fresno High School in 1937, and began his college studies that fall majoring in electrical engineering at Fresno State College while earning his private pilot's license.
When World War II on the horizon, he joined the U. S. Navy as a commissioned officer in 1940 and served with distinction until his retirement in 1961, reaching the rank of Commander. Russell saw combat in both the European and Pacific theaters during WWII and was the CIC Officer on the cruiser USS Helena when she was sunk in a night battle near Guadalcanal in 1943.
In the Korean War, he was the XO aboard the command and control ship USS Mount McKinley when Gen. Douglas MacArthur was aboard this vessel commanding U. S. troops during the landings at Inchon. He later served as commanding officer of the support ship USS Antares and the destroyer USS McNair.
Following his retirement from the Navy, Russell returned to Fresno and went on to teach at Fresno High School until his second and final retirement in 1978. He spent many great years on the golf course after that happy event.
Commander Gash is survived by Marian, his loving wife of over 58 years; and by his two sons, Frank and Warner, and by their families.
Private family services will be held at Belmont Memorial Park.
