The son of Michael & Hanna (Mohler) Gantz or Gauntz, in 1850 he was living with the Moses Miller family in Upper Allen Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, but is not found in the 1860 census.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg October 15, 1862, and mustered into federal service there October 20 as a private with Battery C, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (152nd Pa). He was promoted to sergeant, date as yet unknown, and honorably discharged at term's end October 19, 1865. He is found in every military record as "Gauntz."

After the war, he married Anna M. Best and fathered Agnes Hannah (b. 09/10/69). Cause of his death is listed as "myocarditis chronic."

Jacob Gantz, 88 years old, Civil War veteran and retired farmer, died at his home in Monroe Township near Mechanicsburg Saturday. Mr. Gantz was well known in this community where he had lived his entire life. He was an active member of the Church of God of Mechanicsburg, for many years. His wife, Mrs. Anna Gantz, died less than a year ago. Gantz enlisted for service from this place. He served for three years in Company C. Third Regiment of Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery at Fort Monroe, Va., during which period he was promoted to corporal and later to sergeant, He .was honorably discharged from service October 19, 1865. Private funeral services will be held from his residence in Monroe Township tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be in the family plot in Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
