Balthaser Brungardt was born March 14, 1888 in Victoria, Kansas, where his father was a farmer and businessman. He grew up on a farm near Victoria. He then attended St. Benedict's College where he received a degree in English in 1908. He received a master's degree from Creighton University in 1910. In 1914 he completed his medical degree at Creighton and began his practice in Salina.
Dr. Brungardt then served in World War I after which he returned to Salina to practice medicine and raise a family.

Dr. Brungardt was a member of the Saline County Medical Society, the Kansas Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Cathedral parish and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.

Dr. Brungardt died July 7, 1962, at the farm near Victoria where he often went on weekends. Dr. Brungardt was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Zita Brungardt, in 1925. He was survived by his wife, Margaret, and 18 children - sons Dr. Bernard, Dr. Tom, Frank, Dr. Joseph, Mike, Jerry, Paul, Al, Bill, Tony; daughters Mary Buser, Agnes McDowell, Margaret Hart, Teresa Taquino, Clare Hoeffer, Ann Dimitry, Zita Monica and Katy Brungardt; and 30 granchildren.
