He was Baptized John Chrysostom Mattingly. The 1870 census finds the family in Cloverport District of Breckinridge County with two children at the time: The couple appear on the 1880 census for Breckinridge County, Kentucky. He age 40 and wife 38 (her name shown as Mary G. but could be a mistake). There are minor differences in the children: Joseph is named Samuel J. and Elizabeth was thought to have been born in 1872. She shows an age of 2 on this census. During 1920 he is shown as head-of-household with his daughter, Martha, and her husband living with him. His death certificate #18435, names him as John Chrysosthem.

It must be noted that John used the middle name Charles during his life and this is the manner in which his descendants know him.
