Johann Hermann Hamm was the son of Heinrich Hermann and Anna Catherine Stuerke. He came to America 24 Aug 1866 on the Bremen Bark "Columbus" with his parents and his sister, Anna Elise and brother John Henry. The family settled in Concordia, MO, where his father had been hired to teach in the Concordia Lutheran Church's Day School. John Hermann graduated from the Concordia Lutheran Seminary and his first pastorate was Zion Lutheran Church in Bellfonte, Kansas, in 1888. He married Louise Dorothea Christiana
(Fritze) Biltz 5 May 1889 in Strong City, Chase, KS.
John Hermann was the stepfather of Theodora C. Biltz, and father of Julia, Martin, Herman, Adolph, Theodore, Paul and Martha Hamm.
He was the 2nd pastor to serve the Okarche Lutheran Church, retiring in 1902.
