Fernando came alone to the U.S. at age 13. In 1910, he was a stitcher in a shoe factory. In about 1914, he married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Heidenfelder. They ran a grill in Overland, Missouri. He is said to have been an accomplished machinist and inventor. He and Lizzie had nine children: Ferdinand, Lucille, Beatrice, Julie, Albert, Edward, Eugene, William and Ronald.
