Aaron Junior Bourland was originally from Jackson County and lived there most of his life. He had attended Hallidayboro

Grade School and Elkville High School. Before his military service he was employed by Illinois Central Railroad, where he worked on construction projects. 


Private Bourland was inducted into the US Army on February 16, 1943. He served bravely in Baker Company of the 35th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division and was killed in action on September 19, 1943 in the Solomon Islands during the battle fought near Kokolope Bay. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He also was awarded a Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. 


His parents, 2 brothers and a sister, were living in Du Quoin at  the time of his death. To honor his sacrifice, Private Bourland's name is inscribed on the Keyes Park Memorial in Du Quoin, Illinois.
