On the 27th of May 1755 SAMUEL WHITTEMORE married Olive BLANCHARD 1734-1812 at Hollis, Hillsborough, New Hampshire. Olive was born on the 4th of November 1734 in Dunstable, Massachusetts and died in 1812 in New Ipswich, New Hampshire. She was the daughter of William and his wife, Deliverance PARKER.

Samuel and his wife went to New Ipswich before 1760 and settled on the north side of WHITTEMORE HILL, on the "New Laid Out" Lot 1, later owned by Mr. Ramsdell. Samuel was a man of great physical endurance and industry. It is said, "he would work at clearing the land and rolling logs all day, then light a pine knot, shoulder a bag of grain, carry it two miles through the woods to mill, and the next morning be at his work as usual." (Gould and Lincoln, page 441) In 1763 Samuel Whittemore is found on the Minister's Rate List and the Town Tax List for 1774. On the 3rd of April 1767 Samuel Whittemore signed a Petition to have a Meeting House built on Hopkin's Corner, which is near the center of the Town.

SAMUEL and OLIVE Whittemore were the parents of 11 Children:

(10) Rebecca Whittemore 2 Nov 1775–1776 age 1
(11) Nathan Whittemore 29 Oct 1778–1856 age 78

"The venerable Isaac Appleton says, the first training he ever witnessed was when he was about nine years old, that is, in 1771." "The following is a list of Officers:

Thomas Fletcher, Captain,
Benjamin Knowlton, First Lieutenant
Isaac Appleton, his father, Second Lieutenant
Thomas Heald, Ensign
SAMUEL WHITTEMORE, Clerk
Sergeants: Thomas (Francis?) Fletcher, Charles Barrett, Simeon Fletcher, Ezra Towne
Corporals: Stephen Parker, Joseph Parker, Hezekiah Corey, Moses Tucker, Jr.
Drummer: Thomas Farnsworth
The Company was very large, containing not less than One Hundred. I heard the Clerk call over their names, and five brothers answered to the name of Kinney."

Samuel Whittemore provided Patriotic Service during the Revolutionary War period. "About this time, about 1775, some difficulty seems to have arisen between individuals and the Committee of Inspection, Correspondence, and Safety, so that they declined serving any longer, and a new committee was elected, consisting of Ephraim Adams, Paul Pritchard, Peter Fletcher, Samuel Whittemore, and Joseph Bates. This Committee seems to have been invested with most important powers."

In 1771, 1779, and 1780 Samuel Whittemore was also listed with the Town Officers as Selectman.

About 1784, Samuel and his wife, Olive BLANCHARD Whittemore became infatuated by some of the disciples of Ann Lee, the Shaker. They allowed the Meetings to be held at their home and many in the neighborhood became converts as well as them. Finally, Samuel joined the Shaker Brethren at Harvard. Samuel Whittemore lost his Farm by the movement and returned to New Ipswich poor. He lived with his Son, and died 1812, age 80, his wife, Olive died 1812.

Although Samuel was deluded, he was still Honest in his belief. About 1775 Samuel bought of Deacon Appleton a valuable cow, agreeing to pay for her when it was convenient to him. Some years after, when Continental money became almost worthless, but still by law a legal tender, he waited on the Deacon and told him he would take up his note, offering him the amount in bills. The Deacon replied, he did not want the money, particularly in such a currency, and asked him if he thought it right and honest to pay his debts in that way. Mr. Whittemore said he did not know and, as he had just sold a lamb for the same amount he gave for the cow, but he would ask his God what he ought to do. A week later, he told Deacon Appleton that he had laid the case before his God, and He told him that he must pay as much money for his note as would buy as good a cow as the note was given for, which he immediately did, saying "I should like to see any other God who would give a better opinion in such a case."

Samuel Whittemore owned land in the part called "New Laid Out" in the Town of New Ipswich, New Hampshire. Lot One was owned by Samuel Whittemore who died in 1812, Lot 12b was owned by Samuel Whittemore, Jr. Samuel Whittemore, 3rd. Lot 16 was vacant and known as WHITTEMORE HILL.

Samuel Whittemore died at the age of 81 on the 27th of May 1812 in New Ipswich, Hillsborough, New Hampshire. The location of his burial is unknown at this time. Bio and research by 5th Great Granddaughter, Carole Anne Brown-44556 Whittemore added by hand, not gedcom on the 27th of April 2016 and updated on the 22nd of January 2023.
