Ernest "Benny" Abbott, 94, died at 7:25 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2007, at Willow Rose Nursing Home in Jerseyville from complications resulting from Alzheimer's.

Born Sept. 17, 1912, in Berdan, Ill., he was one of four children of Albert Andrew and Ethel (Hinkle) Abbott.

The 1930 graduate of Carrollton Community High School retired in 1974 from Olin Corp., where he was employed as a storeroom clerk for 40 years. During the same time, he operated a small farm in Kane and was well known for his sharp wit, sense of humor and his ability to play numerous musical instruments. After retirement, he shared his talents on the piano, entertaining many residents at nursing homes with his old-time style of music.

He married the former Viola F. Berry on Feb. 24, 1934, at the home of her sister, north of Kane. They were married 63 years, and she died June 7, 1997.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Ann and Darrell Bell of Orlando, Fla.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Benny Ray and Ramona Abbott of Orlando and Frank Abbott of Kane; 10 grandchildren, Tammy Bell, Tim Abbott, Michael Abbott, Patrick Abbott and Michele Bailey, all of Orlando, Christopher Abbott of Raleigh, N.C., Jeffrey Abbott of Kane, David Abbott of Edwardsville, Margaret "Missy" Van Hoose of Wood River and Steven Bell of Columbia, S.C.; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Flamm of Decatur.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter-in-law, Patricia "Pat" Abbott, on May 10, 2001, and two brothers, Ethelbert and Aden Abbott.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Kane Baptist Church, with the Rev. Chuck Keene officiating.
