Ladson "Lad" Barnes, Jr.
December 13, 1923 - January 7, 2021
Rock Hill, South Carolina - On January 7, 2021 Ladson "Lad" Adville Barnes, Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep at his apartment at Westminster Towers. He had just celebrated his 97th birthday a few weeks prior. Mr. Lad, as he was often referred to, leaves behind countless family members, friends, and colleagues, each with warm memories of a kind man who greeted them with a smile and had the uncanny ability to remember them even if they'd only had the briefest of encounters.
A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Lad was born in Rock Hill in 1923 and grew up on Marion Street with his cousins Frank, John, and Ed Barnes only a few doors down. He later moved to the house on E. Main St that today houses Comporium's Shareholder Services team. Lad graduated from high school at 16 and then attended Clemson Military College until the onset of World War II. In 1943, he left Clemson to join the army and started with their flight training school. Soon after starting this training, the army closed down the program and Lad was transferred to officer training school. He graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant and was sent to Czechoslovakia to join the 10th Infantry.
Lad returned to Clemson after the war ended and graduated in 1948 after completing his degree in Engineering. Shortly thereafter, Lad returned to Rock Hill to work for the Rock Hill Telephone Company. After the purchase of the Fort Mill Telephone Company, Lad transferred across the river and eventually assumed the role of Vice President of Operations. He held this position until the merger of RHTC and its affiliates into Comporium in 2001. Lad became Vice Chairman of the Board for Comporium and served in that capacity until Frank Barnes, Jr. passed. Lad then became Chairman of Comporium's Board of Directors for several years. Rather than retire, he stepped out of the Chairman role and focused more on handling shareholder matters and enjoying his family. Lad served Comporium as a full-time employee for a total of 72 years.
In his personal life, Lad married Martha Nelson Beard on April 3, 1943 and the two had three children during their 47 years of marriage, "Cille" Glass of Rock Hill, "Becky" Francis of Beaufort, and Ladson Barnes, III of Rock Hill. Lad and Martha also had six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In February of 1990, Martha passed away due to complications with a heart valve. Lad later married Rosanne Jeter Moore and added her six children, Rosanne M. Dover, Frances M. Harp, Martha M. Elliott, G. Steve Moore, Jr., James S. Moore, and Louise M. Mickle to his family. Lad is preceded in death by his wife, Rosanne and her children, Rosanne M. Dover, Frances M. Harp, and James S. Moore. Lad's marriage to Rosanne ultimately added six children, fourteen grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild to his family.
Like his cousins, Lad valued education and served on the board for York Technical College. He was an avid supporter of his community and during his life he helped dozens of non-profits, including Unity Presbyterian in Fort Mill where he remained a member until his death. Lad also had a great appreciation of the outdoors ever since he was a young boy spending time on his grandparent's farm outside of Camden. Later in life, he indulged his love of the outdoors primarily through golfing and fishing.
Lad was the final remaining member of the Barnes family's third generation. His passing marks not just the loss of a friend and great leader, but also the end of an era. He will always be remembered for his warm, genuine personality and his smiling face.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Mr. Barnes's name to Unity Presbyterian Church, 303 Tom Hall St, Fort Mill, SC 29715; the Children's Attention Home, PO Box 2912, Rock Hill, SC 29732; or the Area 11 Special Olympics, 2438 Shiland Dr., Rock Hill, SC 29732.
