Before he began ensuring safe flights for astronauts and airline passengers, Robert Treadwell did the same thing during World War II for a famous general on a top-secret mission. While stationed in the Pacific in 1945, the young Army Air Corps corporal was the lone official charged with making sure that Gen. Douglas MacArthur landed safely for a meeting with the Japanese emperor that would end the war. Treadwell, a romantic who wrote his bride, Doris Treadwell, every single day, couldn't have written a better ending to the story of his wartime service. But no one would know about it for nearly 40 years. "He was sworn to secrecy, and he took that very seriously," said his daughter, Patti Unruh. "He finally told us much later." Many stories about Robert Harlyn Treadwell, who died Nov. 18 at age 87, are being told and retold by those who knew him. As for the hush-hush war tale, it unfolded this way: Treadwell was dispatched after dark to an undisclosed site and given one hour to set up landing lights for MacArthur's plane. After the general landed safely, he greeted Treadwell, the only soldier present, and shook his hand before heading off for his late-night rendezvous with history. Treadwell, an Alabama native who grew up in Muskogee, was not finished lending history a helping hand, his daughter said. While a safety director for American Airlines in Tulsa, he did part-time contract work for NASA, including writing part of the safety manual for the space shuttle project, Unruh said. Treadwell later became a consultant, traveling the world to help airlines with safety upgrades. "Dad was basically a self-made man," Unruh said. "He started out with just a high school diploma, although later he would get a degree." His military service ended after the war, but Treadwell wanted to serve those affected by it. He and his church helped many German refugee families relocate to the U.S.
