Gladys Poulsen Sizemore, 88, died Friday, June 6, at the home of her daughter, Verona, Salt Lake City.
She was born March 3, 1898, in Liberty, Idaho, to Joseph F. and Elizabeth Straubhaar Poulsen. She was the third child in a family of eight. Her father was a farmer, and Bladys learned early the value of work.
In 1910 the family farm was sold and another was purchased in Raymond, Idaho. In 1915, her mother died and Gladys was left with much of the responsibility of caring for her younger brothers and sisters.
Two years later in 1917, Gladys met Walter Sizemore at a dance in Cokeville. They were married April 29, 1918, in Paris Idaho. This marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Shortly after their marriage, Walt was drafted into the army and stationed in Oregon. Gladys was able to join him there.
After the war ended, they returned to Raymond where her husband was employed by Ty Christiansen. It was there that their first daughter, Alene, was born. She died a year later with measles.
Walt became employed by Lincoln Feeders in Cokeville and then by Louie Roberts, where he was employed for 40 years. Two more daughters were born to then, Verona and Orlean.
Gladys' real calling in life seemed to have been as a nurse. Beginning in her youth, caring for her father and brothers and sisters, as a wife, she nursed her husband through a badly broken leg and amphysema. As a grandmother, she helped nurse two grandchildren, Nyle and Shanna Rae through bouts with rheumatic fever. Even as she approached 80, her services were required by her sister, Nola, who had cancer and her sister, Etta, who suffered from strokes.
Gladys was a magical cook, providing a feast from an empty refrigerator. She had a sense of humor, and when things went wrong, she perferred laughter to tears. Her husband preceded her in death, Feb 21, 1961
She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs Verona Kemp, Salt Lake City; Mrs Richard (Orlean) Perkins, Cokeville; a brother, Virgil Poulson, Ogden, eight grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
