John Foss Perishes in fire in home.
Tragic Death is fate of former Sterling man, John D. Foss, 83, died 10 miles Northeast of Greenfield, Mo. His home was destroyed by fire last Wednesday evening, April 13, 1955.
Mr. Foss lived alone and it is presumed that he was attempting to start a fire with kerosene or gasoline when a flare-up occurred and flames swept through the dwelling. His body was removed from the ruins of his home about 7:30 p.m. Word of his tragic death was received here by his siter, Mrs. G. J. Agena. Other survivors include a son, Steve of Amsterdam, Mo., a brother Theodore Foss of Corvallis, Or. and five grandchildren.
Mr. Foss had lived in Sac Township, Missouri for 14 years, was back at Sterling a few years ago visiting his relatives and many friends here. He was remarkably active for a man of his age, and expressed the hope that he would be able to return for another visit, but such did not come to pass.
Graveside rites were conducted at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon in Corry cemetery by Rev. Tom Proctor.
Sympathy is with those who mourn the death of Mr. Foss.

Using gasoline to start a fire caused death to an elderly man at his home in the Sand Mountain community early Wednesday night. John D. Foss, 83, was dead when his home was discovered flames by Rollo Holman, who happened to be passing by. Holman immediately summoned help, but too late to rescue Mr. Foss, or to save the burning house.
The elderly Foss, who lived in only one of the five room house, ordinarly used kerosene to start fires, but had none at hand on this occasion. It is thought that a gasoline explosion spread flames so fast that he was unable to get out of the house.
The tragedy occured only about one quarter mile from where Jim Tackett was found shot to death a few months ago.
Rev. Tom Procter will conduct graveside services at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Corry cemetery. Burial will be under direction of Canada funeral home.
Mr. Foss, who came here from Nebraska in 1941, is survived by a son, Steve, of Amsterdam, Mo.; a brother, Theodore of Corvallis, Ore.; and a sister, Mrs. G. J. Agena of Sterling, Nebr.
