EDWARD C. FOSS CALLED

Only a few hours before the church bells rang out the old year last Friday night Edward C. Foss for 61 years a resident of this community was called to his reward. "Ed Foss," as he was generally known, was born on a farm near Adams on April 14, 1874. On January 22 of that year he was received into God's covenant of grace by the sacrament of holy baptism. As a boy he attended the public schools of those years. Which were far from being what they are today.
On September 26, 1900 he was married to Anna Matthies of Sterling. The wedding was in St. John Lutheran church, with Rev. H. Wendt officiating. To their union six children were born two of whom, a boy and a girl, died in early youth.
Mr. Foss joined St. John Lutheran church on March 29, 1901 by confession and was confirmed by Rev. Wendt. With the exception of eight years when he lived elsewhere he has continued a faithful member in that church.
After living in the Sterling community for eight years in 1908 the young couple moved to a farm near Scottsbluff. In 1916 they returned again and lived on a farm south of Sterling until failing health caused him to retire in 1928. Since then they lived here in town.
Two years ago the deceased suffered a stroke and several times since then he was in a critical condition. For the last six seeks he was failing rapidly. His end came quietly and peacefully on New Years eve. His age 69 years, 8 months and 17 days. He is survived by his faithful wife and the following children; Charles of Seattle, Washington, Mrs. Maud Bargman of Denver, Colorado, Mrs Viola Thiesfeld, Sterling, Landis, Crab Orchard. There are nine grandchildren. The following brothers and sisters also survive: John, Greenfield, Mo., Mrs, Anna Mack, Haxtun, Colorado, Mrs. Etta Agena, Sterling, Theodore, Corvallis, Oregan and one aunt Mrs. Caroline Eilers.
Funeral services were held at St. John Lutheran church on Tuesday afternoon. In the absence of the pastor Rev. C. Schulte of Adams was the
officiating clergyman. Interment was at the Sterling cemetery.
