Brother Virgil was born in Rogers, MN on October 13, 1914. He was one of nine children born to Nicholas Michael Evers and Mary Elizabeth Ellis Evers.
The family moved to San Diego in 1923. He graduated from St. Augustine's High School of San Diego in 1933. Brother Virgil entered the novitiate of the De La Salle Christian Brothers in Napa, CA on August 5, 1933 and pronounced first vows in August of 1934. He made his final vows on July 24, 1939.
Brother Virgil attended St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA from 1934 until 1937. He began his forty-two years as a Catholic educator at Cathedral High School of Los Angeles in 1937. Additional teaching assignments were Sacred Heart High School and St. Peter's High School in San Francisco; St. Mary's College High School, Berkeley; San Joaquin Memorial High School, Fresno; Christian Brothers High School, Sacramento; and the Junior Novitiate, Justin High School, and St. Mary's Residence School, Napa.
He retired to the Holy Family Community at Mont La Salle in 1979. Brother Virgil found a new and fulfilling ministry after retirement from teaching. He devoted the next twenty-one years of his life serving as a volunteer in the Catholic chaplain's program at the California Veteran's Home in Yountville, CA.
Brother Virgil was made an "honorary veteran" in 2001 in recognition and appreciation for his service to veterans. Brother Virgil is survived by niece Sister Patricia Hanson, CSJ of San Diego, and grand-neice Sheila McCarthy of Los Angeles and many other loving relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held in the Christian Brothers Chapel at Mont La Salle in Napa at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 21, 2009.
Burial and reception will follow immediately.
