LEROY GARTON

Leroy GARTON was born February 20, 1863 in Williamstown, Kansas. Elizabeth MAYHEW, his wife, was born there on February 28, 1870. They were early day pioneers on Beaver County, Oklahoma. He with his wife and three boys, Wilce, Willard, and Ralph moved to a dugout on their homestead a few miles east of LaKemp, Oklahoma in 1905, from Garber, Oklahoma. This trip was made by covered wagon. Leroy broke sod with a walking plow. The main crops were maize, kaffir corn and later wheat. Early day mail came from LaKemp and Sophia, Oklahoma. Wilce, Willard and Ralph attended the Liberty School, one and a half miles south of their farm. Mrs. Elizabeth GARTON served on the Liberty School Board for several years, furnished room and board for the teachers, and was never to busy to help with the sick or lay out the dead. They attended church at the South Flat Community church. Since they were Primitive Baptist, they later held services in their home.

Mr. and Mrs. Leroy GARTON and their children are now deceased but hosts of their descendants live in the Booker, Lipscomb County, Texas area.
