On 8 Dec 1941, he was a Clark Field, Manila, Philippines Islands, when it was bombed by the Japanese. He was at Bataan and Corregidor. He is credited as one of the last men to escape from the Philippines after it fell to the Japanese. He escaped to Darwin, Australia.

His wife, Ruth Allen Dittman, was at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed by the Japanese on 7 Dec 1941.

Citation: Henry Dittman, Captain, Air Corps, U.S. Army - For extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight of nine B-17 bombers from Honolulu to the Philippine Islands from 5 Sep to 12 Sep 1941. Captain Dittman (then a second lieutenant) displayed skillful airmanship and accurate knowledge of the highly technical details involved in the successful execution of the flight, which involved traversing by air uncharted waters from Wake Island to Port Moresby and Darwin and thence to Fort Stotsenburg. The speed with which each phase of the flight was accomplished indicated a high quality of navigation. This outstanding achievement reflects the highest credit on the military forces of the United States."
