Darrell Smith Dies in German
Shelbyville Airman, 42, Killed in Fall
Word was received here today of the death in Germany of U.S. Air Force Major Darrell Smith, 42, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Smith of 629 E. Jackson Street.
Major Smith was injured fatally in a fall Saturday evening in Frankfurt, Germany, where he was stationed with the 27th Signal Base Depot of the Air Force. Details of the accident were not immediately available.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later, pending the arrival of his wife in the United States.

Rites To Be Arranged for Major Darrell Smith
The body of Major Darrell Smith, former local man who died September 5, following an accident in Germany, will arrive here Thursday. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Murphy Mortuary.
Major Smith, son of Mahlon Smith of 629 E. Jackson St., was injured in an accident at the Pirmasens Signal Depot and his death occurred at an Army hospital in Landstuhl, Germany.
A native of this city, he was born on April 28, 1911, the son of Mahlon and Belle (Anderson) Smith. He graduated from Shelbyville High School and after serving with the National Guard, enlisted in the Army in February, 1942. He served in the Philippines during World War II.
On November 11, 1944, he was married to Mabel Johnson of Detroit, Mich., and she survives with the father; a daughter by a previous marriage, Mrs. Patricia Gibson, Shelbyville; a granddaughter, Sherra Gibson; three brothers and one sister, Norman Smith and Mrs. Hazel Hill of this city; Lester Smith, Edinburg, and Morris Smith, Muncie. Also surviving are the step-mother of this city, and two step-brothers, James Lambert of Shelby County and Russell Lambert of Hutchinson, Minn.

Body of Serviceman to Arrive Here Thursday
Last rites have been arranged for Major Darrell Smith, former Shelbyville man who died September 5 following an accident at the Pirmasens Signal Depot in Germany.
The body will arrive here Thursday at 2:36 p.m. and will be taken to the Murphy Mortuary where friends may call after 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Vine Street Methodist Church Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Burial, with full military services to be in charge of Camp Atterbury personnel, will be in Forest Hill cemetery.
Major Smith, son of Mahlon Smith of 629 E. Jackson St., also is survived by the widow; a daughter; three brothers and one sister; the step-mother and two step-brothers. Members of the Shelby County chapter of the American War Mothers will meet the train Thursday afternoon.
