Freda Blume Serkin Oct. 21, 1914--Nov. 8, 2009, Freda Blume Serkin, a resident of Arizona since the late 1970's, died peacefully at her home in Scottsdale on Nov 8. She had very recently celebrated her 95th birthday. The daughter of immigrants from Eastern Europe, Freda was born and raised in Boston, MA. Her father, Jacob Blume, was a well known early labor leader instrumental in founding the labor movement that became the AFL-CIO. She was the first in her family to go to college, and graduated from Boston Teachers College in 1933, at the top of her class. She later received a Masters Degree, with honors, in Psychology, from Boston University. Freda retired in 1977 after a career as a reading teacher and school psychologist in the Newton, MA school system. Mrs. Serkin was married to Barry M. Serkin, a clothing executive in Boston, for 61 years until his death in 1994. Freda is survived by her son Bennet Serkin and his wife Kathe Reitman, her daughter Marjorie Schulte and husband James Schulte, her daughter Emily Serkin, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Arrangements entrusted to Sunland Memorial Park and Mortuary, 15826 N. Del Webb Blvd, Sun City, Az. 85351.
