Harriet was the daughter of Merritt Alling and Joanna Smith of Warren County, NY.

She married Louis (aka Lewis) Middleton about 1872 in Warren Co., NY. They moved to Carthage between 1880-1885. Harriet's sister, Carrie Alling (Mrs. Alfred Smith) lived near Carthage.

Harriet died of stomach cancer. She was survived by her husband and 5 daughters. Lewis Middleton died a month later in a railroad accident.

In addition to the children linked below, there was a daughter (Blanche) referred to as Mrs. G. E. Mitchell of Los Angeles in Jennie's obituary (see her memorial page).
Update as of March, 2021, Dorothy Blanche was located via a family tree posted on Ancestry.com, and is included below. It is unknown whether she first married a Mr. Mitchell. At least by 1920 she was married to Frank L. Emrich. Her name is incorrectly spelled Emrick on the gravestone.
