Auto Mishap Fatal
Fred Curtiss Dies Of Injuries From Wreck Christmas Eve
An automobile accident of unusual nature, 6 miles north of Lyons about 7 o'clock Christmas Eve, cost the life of Fred E. Curtiss, farmer, who died of internal injuries several hours after being brought to the Lyons hospital.
Mrs. Curtiss and their fourteen year old daughter, passengers in the car, escaped with only minor hurts, altho the latter was thrown from the machine.
The accident occurred soon after the Curtiss family had driven from their farm yard, 6 miles north of the city, onto the state highway and had turned south toward Lyons. Motor or ignition trouble developed with their model T Ford touring car and the engine quit. Mr. Curtiss got out to adjust the trouble. An oil truck from the south had just passed the stalled car when a Chrysler coupe driven by Marion Adams of Geneseo, came up from behind. The Adams car struck the Curtiss machine in such a way that the rear end was swung around toward the center of the road. Curtiss was standing near the front of the machine on the driver's side and as the car spun around was directly under the wreck. The machine passed over and rolled over in the ditch nearly two rods farther south. Adams' car went into the ditch after impact.
Adams' said afterward that the approach of the truck, coupled with the fact that the Curtiss car was dark, prevented his knowing the stalled car was there until too late to avoid it. That he made a desperate effort to cut away from the machine was evident in the fact that the right front wheel and bumper of his car apparently caught the left rear part of the Curtiss car.
Mr. and Mrs. Curtiss were brought to the Lyons hospital immediately, reaching there at 7:30. His right leg was broken and nearly severed below the knee, and an operation was performed to set the fracture in the hope the limb might be saved.
At 3:30 o'clock yesterday morning he passed away, evidently from internal injuries, loss of blood and shock. Mrs. Curtiss suffered a wrench-back but at the hospital today it was reported her condition was not serious. The daughter was uninjured in spite of the fact that she was hurled from the car. Adams escaped without injury. Both cars were badly wrecked.
Mr. Curtiss was 47 years old, born March 14, 1884. He came here from Salina to manage the farm north of Lyons belonging to H. H. Smith. He is survived by the widow and one daughter, Margaret, and three brothers and one sister, Roy Curtiss of Kansas City, Clarence Curtiss of Lyons, Floyd Curtiss of Lawrence and Mrs. Clara Singleton of Kansas City.
Funeral services will be held at the Ellsworth Baptist church at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be in Ellsworth Cemetery.
